This course provides a practical grounding in the principles of odour monitoring (ambient and source), assessment and control. Regulatory frameworks for odour assessment and management are examined. This is a practical course which includes field activities, including visiting an odour laboratory to odour-generating operations. The course uses extensive reference to case studies.
ISSUES ADDRESSED
The practical challenges of effective odour management include scientific, engineering and social aspects.
- Principles of odour measurement and assessment: Human response to odours; Methods of quantification; How much odour is too much ?
- Odour sampling issues: Problems of area sources and different methods; How to decide which approach; Stack sampling; Sample storage and transport

- Planning and Assessment for Odours: Estimating emissions; Odour modelling; Assessment criteria; Exposure analysis; Uncertainty
- Odour Management: Licence conditions; Understanding and managing odour sources; Dealing with complaints; Dealing with community and regulatory pressures; Automated management systems
- New developments in odour management such as real-time and reactive management systems for industrial facility applications are presented. A number of case studies will be used to illustrate the main issues.
The second day of the course includes a half day of field activities, demonstrating how the above principles are implemented in practice.
